We won the lottery!
Nyertünk a lottón!
|Káldor, László||A2 1/2 Sheet (cca. 42 x 59 cm)|
|1962||Very good, fold marks, some paper loss and pin holes at the corners.|
This charming lottery poster by László Káldor is a fine example of the artists great drawing skills and humorous style. It is a typical Hungarian poster from the 1960s, when many artistic styles coexisted, and Hungarian poster designers thrived. Among them, Kaldor had a great sense of humor and outstanding compositional skills. His effortless style of drawing is evident here.
The poster shows us an embracing couple, the wife giving a kiss on his husband's cheek who has probably just arrived home from work. He is wearing a blue suit, a brown hat and has a suitcase in his left hand. They are both smiling, as the wife races to meet his husband as they share the great news: they won! The wife is wearing a kitchen apron, and drops a wooden spoon, while the husband drops his suitcase, and his hat falls off.
Modern lottery was introduced in Hungary in 1957, so it was relatively new at the time. Football pool has been popular since its modern inception, 1947. During the late 1950s and 1960s, lottery has been frequently advertised in Hungary and this poster is one of the most charming works that was made for this purpose. It is an outstanding work in Kaldor's vast oeuvre.
