Benczúr, Gyula

He was an important academic painter of the 19th century. He painted historical compositions for official orderings, many of them are still very important in the collective memory of Hungarians (Christening of Vajk, etc.). He was a grand master of the age, studying in Munich, and acclimatizing the academic painting manner in Hungary.

In 1885, he designed the very first Hungarian poster for the National General Exhibition, which poster is a traditional, baroque composition.                                                                                                                                                       .
