Divéky József

Jozsef Diveky or Joseph Diveky was a poster designer and illustrator, mostly active as a poster artist in the 1910’s. He made most of his works in Austria, where he was member of the Wiener Werkstätte group.

He studied in Vienna and Budapest, and lived in Brussels for a while. After 1918 he lived in Switzerland, and in 1945 he moved back to Hungary.

Many of his works are in Austrian public collections. During the First World War he made many great designs for war loan and exhibition posters, in German and Hungarian as well. They are characterized by the Art Noveau style and the artist’s fine drawing skills.

He was a member of the famous Wiener Werkstätte, he was working on illustrations, costume designes and in many other fields fo desgn. He was also interested in theatre art: he founded a marionette theatre in Brussels that played shows in Switzerland too, and he also intended to establish a marionette theatre in Sopron, Hungary after his return.                                                                                                                                           .
