Description:

Poster for Parker Fountain Pen. The first fountain pen was invented by a Romanian man called Poenaru in 1827 but the mass production of them hadn't started until the end of the 1880s. The brand Parker was founded by George S. Parker, an American teacher. Parker Duofold was introduced to the market in 1921 and that is the date which is considered the golden-age of fountain pens. These pens were equipped with a gold nib because gold is a relatively flexible material and it is resistant to corrosion. Fountain pens became extremely popular very quickly but in the 1950s as a result of the quick success of the ballpoint pen this popularity rapidly dropped. Parker was one of the few companies which could stay alive after this period.

This poster is a very elegant piece, showing two parker pens in different colours and two feathers in the same colours as the pens. Before the invention of dip-pens (which preceeded fountain pens) pens were made from the feather of large birds. These were called quill pens. The top of the Parker pen is also designed in the shape of a feather thus the use of it on the poster makes even more sense.
