Karvaly József

1864 - 1928

József Karvaly was a painter and graphic artist, working during the turn of the century.

He studied at the Academy of Budapest and Munich. Besides taking part in exhibitions in the early 1900s, he designed some excellent Art Nouveau posters as well.

His works are clear and decorative drawings with intensive colors. His two main tools were humor and eroticism. Some of his poster designs were highly erotic, scandalous at the time, such as the poster for Paradicsom Cabaret (Paradise Cabaret), his masterpiece, which shows the back of a lady standing naked, who is only wearing a hat and high heels, while next to her, there is a gentleman snake, wearing a top hat. Another example is an alcohol rub poster that depicts a bathing young woman.                                                                                                                                             .
