Légrády Sándor

1906 - 1983

Légrády was a painter, goldsmith, stamp designer, who begun his career in the late 1930s.

He designed propaganda posters during World War II. all of which present a heroic and monumental vision of the nation at war. Some of these works were ordered by military associations and of them depict the fearless Hungarian soldier wearing their uniforms.

Légrády is well known mostly for his stamp designs for the Hungarian Post. He had been working for them for nearly 50 years. In the 1950s he designed the new coat of arms of Hungary.

His works represent a classicist, historicist and monumental style that was very popular and easily accessible. He used the same style on his posters: his compositions cosist of heroic figures and theatrical scenes.                                                                                                                                               .
