Muskovszky László

1902 - ?

László Muskovszky was a poster designer. He was a very productive artist as he designed more than 300 movie posters during the interwar period.

Little is known about the personal life of Muskovszky, yet he was one of the most fruitful film poster designers of the 1930s and 1940s. He was designing almost exclusively movie posters. His designs represent the common taste of the era: they are grandiose, erotic, often frightening compositions. He usually used the faces of the featuring starts in a large scale, typically with strong lighting from one side, in addition to the depiction of one or more key scenes from the movie. Most of these works have moderate artistic value. He used the typical elements and colors of popular visual culture.

Muskovszky became a key character of the movie poster design, he was also commissioned to make decorations for the first Hungarian movie festival. For this occasion he painted the largest picture ever made of governor Miklós Horthy.

Some poster designs by him are made in a very delicate Art Deco style, for example his monumental composition for UFA films.                                                                                                                                     .
