József Deutsch Ernő

1901 - 1943

Deutsch was a Hungarian poster artist. His first posters appeared in 1926, and he designed many more until 1941.

Early in his career he was mostly commissioned to design movie posters, which remained his main occupation, but after a few years, he made more and more poster designs for commercial products.

Some of his works follow the strict constructivist style that was established in Hungary by Kassák and Bortnyik, others resemble the modernist posters Bortnyik and Berény, like Verdun.

However, the highly decorative Art Deco style of the 1920’s and 1930’s was more typical of Deutsch, which is represented on many of his movie posters.                                                                                                                                             .
