Székely Kálmán
Kálmán Székely is a graphic artist, who designed posters in the late 1960s and the 1970s. He studied at the Department of Typography at the Academy of Applied Arts in the mid 1960s.
He designed a few excellent Pop Art movie posters around 1970. Székely applied the visual elements of American Pop Art: vivid colours, floating shapes, and contrasted photos appear on his designs with a modern typography. His movie posters represent the influence of the psychedelic poster art of the counter culture in the US, the style of Wes Wilson and others. Floating, pattern-like shapes appeared on their posters for concerts and music festivals in the 1960s. Székely combined the painted forms with photomontage.
He designed the posters of some US cult movies, like Easy Rider and The Strawberry Statement. The Pop Art style that was considered revolutionary and scandalous in Hungary was perfect for these movies. He later became a stamp designer. .
