Somorjai Imre

1914 - 1996

Imre Somorjai was a poster artist. In 1941, he graduated with a degree in graphics from the School of Applied Arts, taught by Jenő Haranghy. Initially, he worked as a designer at the Herend Porcelain Factory, then from 1947 he worked at MAFIRT designing posters.

He then designed movie and other cultural posters as an independent graphic designer. He designed many movie posters in a traditional pictorial realist style. This popular, photo-like style, which originated from the Art Deco, was popular even in the late 1940s. His style somewhat altered in the 1950s, due to the strong influence of the socialist realism.

After this period he was able to adapt to the new tendencies and throughout his career he mostly designed movie posters. He designed many posters during the 1960s, using the new, modern techniques. He was very versatile and worked in many different styles. Around 1970s he designed a few Pop Art posters.                                                                                                                                           .
