Méhely Iván
1912 - 1995
Iván Méhely was a really versatile graphic designer.
He studied at the School of Applied Arts (Iparművészeti Iskola) under the supervision of Jenő Haranghy, Ferenc Helbing and Gyula Kaesz.
His first posters appeared in the mid 1930s. He frequently designed posters for theaters, commercial products, and a poster series for the National Children’s Week. His style was a unique blend of the clear Modernist and Art Deco poster style of the 1920s and 1930s. Méhely's interest in typograpy is perceptible when looking at his posters. Most of these works present excellent typographic solutions.
In 1939 he designed some posters for an extreme-rightist association called Turul Szövetség. He continued to make posters for theaters in the 1940s.
In 1947, Méhely designed an election poster for the Nemzeti Parasztpárt (National Peasants’ Party), which shows the influence of the powerful political poster style that occured in 1945.
In the 1950s and 60s he carried on with designing posters never completely abandoning his Modernist roots.
