The movie is a heavy drama, written by Tibor Cseres and directed by András Kovács. When it was presented in cinemas, it had a great interest as it was dealing with a heavy and shameful historical event, the hecatomb at Novi Sad (Újvidék). In 1942 the senior officers of the Hungarian army ordered a razzia in the region, which resulted in the murdering of 2500 Serbian and 800 Jewish people. There was hardly any discussion about it, and the film was trying to deal with the topic from a new point of view. Director András Kovács said:
"...I saw an opportunity for a new representation of fascism in Cold Days. It was very often represented in a simplistic way, where psychological characterization was replaced by uniforms. It was not shadowed out that fascism is not unhuman or something demonic, but it is a human thing, and if we are not careful..., these manners will appear again and again, and they are not connected to stated uniforms."
The movie depicts four participant figures of the hecatomb, waiting for the judgement of the court in a cell, while they are recalling the cold days of the hecatomb. The suggestive scenes include amazing acting performances of as outstanding Hungarian artists as Iván Darvas, Margit Bara, Zoltán Latinovits, Tibor Szilágyi and Irén Psota.
The movie poster is a decorative piece with a minimalist design: the black lines and shapes on the white background and the concentrated composition of image and typography contribute to a spectacular piece. The cold visuality of it evokes the atmosphere of the movie perfectly.
