Summer, Balaton, romance. Etelka, the self-sacrificing, divorced cinema cashier, receives a two week trip to Balaton. On the advice of his girlfriend, she tries to explore life. Etelka seems to have been changed completely: new hairstyle, new clothes, lipstick and makeup. He first meets the Czech guest artist, but his young roommate, Anna Takacs, takes him. The well-mannered and modest widow Pinter is vacationing next door with his two children. Amidst the series of disappointments, Etelka hardly even notices the man, even though Pinter had already courted her in Pest. After several misunderstandings, they finally fall into each others arms in Budapest, when Etelka, throwing aside the mascara, returns to her old self and sits back behind the window of the cinema box office.
