The somewhat awkward Mester Lajos works in a leather factory and is in love with Éva, the kindergarten-teacher. Éva would like to become a singer. Vannai, the sly music teacher arranges for her to sing in the night-club "Kakukk", expecting her devotion in return. Éva and Lajos are at the point of confessing their love to each other when the boy (through his friend, the scoundrel Api) gets involved in a theft and is sacked. Éva gets him new employment through Vannai's help. Lajos believes Éva to have given herself to the music teacher and the two lovers quarrel. Vannai, a secret international spy, attempts to get an invention out of the country by using Éva. Incidentally Lajos unmasks and catches the gang. The lovers confess their love to each other and Eva starts her career as a singer.
