Description:

We vote for the People's Front on May 17 is a 1953 vintage Hungarian communist election political propaganda poster designed by Kornel Szentgyorgyi.

Publisher: Budapest, Magyar Fuggetlenségi Nepfront Orszagos Tanacsa, 1953, Offset Nyomda Budapest (F.v. Pomayer Gyula).

This is a very typical political propaganda poster from the first half of the 1950s, designed in a socialist realist manner. The young couple is gazing forward into the bright future, while voting, and they have a senseless smile on their faces. In the 1950s the obligatory socialist realist style was apparent in almost all fields of art. The hands of the artists were tied. They were forced to make realistic compositions centered around workers who are always smiling and staring in the distance. They are strong, honest and satisfied with the new system. The posters of this period are interesting historic documents and in many cases great pieces of art.

Kornel Szentgyorgyi was a painter and graphic artist. He finished his studies at the Academy of Fine Arts in 1941, under Bertalan Karlovszky, István Szőnyi and Ágost Benkhard. After this, he spent two years in Rome. He participated in the social realist graphic design exhibition in 1953.
