The Hungarian-Soviet Cultural Society was founded in January 1945 in Hungary with the aim to deepen the Hungarian-Soviet friendship. The society's actual aim was to propagate a Soviet-style communist regime. It rapidly became a mass organization, reaching half a million members in a year, and almost 1.5 million members during the 1950s. Its first chairman was Albert Szent-Györgyi.
The poster advertises the second congress of the society, which was held in 1953 between February 14 and 15. The poster is mostly a typographic composition, with a red gradient background. The text is decorated by a golden laurel wreath and a red star. The flags of the two countries also appear on the poster. The piece was designed by an unknown artist.
It is an important historical document which show a step in the process, how the Hungarian communists worked on pushing the country from being a pluralistic democracy into a socialist state.
