The White Bird Marked with Black (Ukrainian: Білий Птах З Чорною Ознакою, translit. Bilyi Ptakh z Chornoyu Oznakoyu', Russian: Белая птица с чёрной отметиной, translit. Belaya ptitsa s chornoy otmetinoy) is a 1971 Ukrainian-Soviet drama film, directed by Yuri Ilyenko. It was entered into the 7th Moscow International Film Festival and won the Golden Prize. The film is a colourful 'optimistic tragedy' of a poor family in Ukraine, living in the Carpathian mountains near the Romanian border, during the Second World War. Five sons of the family make up the village band, but as the battles between the Nazi-supported Ukranian nationalists and the Soviets go on, their band loses one player after another.
