Description:

Tram poster from 1962 advertising 'Verseny' Department Store. Both department stores and slopwork were very common in Socialism. There were several department stores in Hungary. For example the State Department Store, Csillag, or Centrum. In all of these department stores slopwork was available. The reason why slopwork was so widespread is that afterthe Second World War the economy was in a very bad state and despte the declamation of the Socialist government they did not make the situation better, rather on the contrary. People could not afford quality fashion thus they bought slopwork.

The colours  and styles introduced on the poster are very typical of the 1960s. The composition consists of two stylized man figures, but as this was an advertisment for clothing, their outfit got more emphasis than the faces of the men. The background is the same colour and pattern as the men's tops. The text says 'slopwork is a pleasure in spring as well'. In Hungarian it's a cute word-play. At the bottom the name and address of the department store is written.
