Description:
Decorative advertisement artwork from the 1960s. It was created by an unknown designer. The artwork was a maquette for a commercial ad about the Silk weeks at the Centrum Department Store.
During the 1950s and the 1960s brands and a wide selection of goods did not exist in the Socialist countries. There were several big, centralised department stores in Hungary, for example the State Department Store, the Csillag (Star), or the Centrum. These stores had departments for women’s wear, men’s wear, shoes, technical goods, toys, etc. where the goods were the same, and had low, standardised quality. It was also really common to organise thematic days or weeks to make an attraction for customers.
The attraction this time was the silk which was a luxurious commodity back then in the Eastern bloc. It was a perfect idea of the designer to use the motif of the peacock as this exotic and precious animal perfectly matched the character of the silk. The designer used mixed technique (drawing, painting, sticking) and created a colourful and spectacular pattern in the design by the tail feather of the bird. The animal is captured in a light, cheerful way. All these features, together with the inscription of the poster, this design evokes the atmosphere of the 1960s.
